The rowing machines spoken of are in most athletic
clubs in the US. There is only one manufacturer that I know of, but I
can't quite remember the name just now. Yes, they all measure distance
"rowed" in meters, and something else in units of 500 m, and the manufacturer
even has something called the Million Meter Club. I think crew events
usually have races at the 2000 m distance; at least that is what I think I
have seen in the televised Olympic events.
These devices actually deliver a pretty decent
workout. I had a college friend who was on the varsity crew, and he was
really fit and very muscular.
