Dear John, Stan and ALL,

I just looked through the 'Drive' pages of Saturday's copy of 'The Age' a
Melbourne newspaper, where there were 32 pages of new and used car
advertisements.

Here are some general observations:

Power
All mentions of power were specified in kilowatts. The abbreviations kw and
KW were used as well as the correct SI symbol, kW. Usually there was no
space between numbers and units, eg, 125kw. Horsepower was not mentioned in
any of the advertisements.
A tendency that I noted was for there to be few mentions of power in the
advertisements; power references seemed to be restricted to more powerful
cars. I didn't find any reference to power ratings below 100kW and
references to 135kW and 145kW motors were more common.

Engine capacity
All engine capacities listed were in litres. Cubic centimetres and
millilitres were not mentioned at all. I thought that I had found one but it
turned out that it was a model designated as 206CC, which had a capacity of
2.0L.

Distances
All distances were in kilometres. However, most were incorrectly written as
kms, Kms, or as K's as in 'low K's'.

Wheel sizes
All references to wheel sizes were in inches -- without exception. I have no
way of explaining this anachronism within an otherwise all metric industry.
As you say in the USA, 'Go figure!'

Cheers,
