Your question is very timely indeed. Today is February 12. In 1812 of that year 
a decree issued by Napoleon and his minister of the interior, Montalivet, 
allowed by decree the use of customary weights and measures in the retail 
trades.

I am at my work now. When I arrive at home tonight, that will be late, as I am 
going to visit friends, I will elaborate.

Napoleon dealt one of the severest blows to the metric system possible.
