Yes, that is "unfortunate", as you put it. And I ask "why not"? You don't think the internet is a purely American channel of communication, do you? Only in the US are people still using Ye Olde English system of measurements. The rest of the world's population (95% of it) uses metric units.
People other than Americans (and a few others around the world) can't use your BMI index calculator because they don't know their weight in pounds or their height in feet and inches, and don't know how (or can't be bothered) to convert. Are you trying hard not to be useful to 95% of the world's population? That seems counterproductive.

... we only use the standard American measurement system ...Did you know that, to a certain extent, the units of measurement to which you refer are NOT the standard measurement system in the US? By act of Congress (1975 and 1988) the SI metric system is the preferred units of measurement for trade and commerce in the US. (References and details will be provided if you are sincerely interested in the possibility of making some positive changes.)
