Karl, sir:
More ideas about clock faces are welcome.
My system has been misbehaving and it still is not fine. Trying to read mail (in betweet sessions). I did send the TWO clocks (prototypes) that I have and am using to read both *metric and conventional times*. Did you also see the French clock showing 'back-to-back the 12-hours and the 10 hours' that I quoted having been used in the article American Scientist; V66; 305-13 (1978) by Richard A.Carrigan Jr. Editors decided not to use my rejoinder which I used in my book: Towards A Unified Technology (1982).
Hour Minute Second
Short Hand 12 xxx xxx
Long Hand xxx 60 xxx
Second Hand - xxx 60

The clock face I have shown (analog NOT digital) uses the follwing distribution of the *Time of the HOURS*
Hour Minute Second
Short Hand 12 1200 120000
Long Hand xxx 100 10000
Second Hand xxx xxx 100
I had quite a brickbats proposing this to USMA listserv during 2002, suggesting that BIG BEN face may have these time divisions, to raise politico-public opinion on introduction of *Decimalisation of Time of the HOUR in link with Arc-angle* that bridges the gap left by METRIC exponants when 'decimale time/French Republican Calendar was introduced' over 200 years ago to last for a mere 13-year period, due to THIS missing link between Time & arc-Angle axis.
YES, face of Big Ben when changed can mean 'instant reaction & form world opinion on Calendar Reform too. I have not been reading mail for several days, due to several accumulated reasons. Since Big Ben face cannot be seen from a distance, there seems NO need for the seconds hand; as such only the dial face need re-contruction to read:
100 (division) decimal minutes =1 HOUR =60 minutes
Isn't this 'cool & easy'!

Dear Calendar People

The E-mails I've been having with John Hynes have got me thinking about the
relationship between hands on a clock face and the units of time measured.

The following table shows how many units need to be marked around the clock
face for a given hand to measure a given unit.

             Hour Minute Second
Short Hand 12 720 43200
Long Hand 1 60 3600
Second Hand - 1 60

There is no simple correspondence between hands and units (despite the name
'second hand' or 'minute hand').
To do this one must assign a scale around the clock face to each hand. This
is done as follows:

             Hour Minute Second
Short Hand 12 xxx xxx
Long Hand xxx 60 xxx
Second Hand - xxx 60

But then there's nothing to stop your from using hands differently by for
example counting a quarter of a turn by a minute hand as quarter of an hour
(so using a '1' in the table).

For the French Decimal Time (as shown to me by John Hynes) we have

            Hour Minute Second
Short Hand 10 1000 100,000
Long Hand 1 100 10,000

to these two hands John adds a second hand to give

            Hour Minute Second
Short Hand 10 1000 100,000
Long Hand 1 100 10,000
Second Hand - 1 100

The clocks had two scales (10 and 100 units round the face) leaving us with

            Hour Minute Second
Short Hand 10 xxx xxx
Long Hand xxx 100 xxx
Second Hand - xxx 100

However, for everyday telling of the time we don't need to know the time to the second and so we get

Hour Minute Short Hand 12 xxx Long Hand xxx 60

and
            Hour Minute
Short Hand 10 xxx
Long Hand xxx 100

Now would it be simpler to have

           Deciday Centiday
Short Hand 10 xxx
Long Hand xxx 10

or even
           Deciday Centiday Milliday
Short Hand 10 xxx xxx
Long Hand xxx 10 xxx
Longer Hand xxx xxx 10

If clocks were invented no later than hours and minutes, would there be 12 minutes in an hour?

More ideas about clock faces are welcome.
