US car makers tend to have MILES km on cars sold in the US and km miles on cars sold in Canada.  Japanese and European cars just have metric only gauges on cars sold in metric countries and the dual type in the US and UK.  this way they only have two versions, whereas the US companies have to keep track of three versions.
