You may know it, but WE don't. There are people out there telling us that the basketball played outside the US uses FFU. I wanted to know for sure if this was true of not.
The purpose of this listserver is to DISCUSS metrication in the US. Part of that is to identify what aspects of US society are so ingraind in FFU, we are told they can not change. This example with basketball (and US football) proves wrong the concept that these sports can not be played on rounded metric playing surfaces. Since the FIBA rules are 100 % metric, it means that we can expect such sports as basketball to have their courts designed and built to the FIBA metric specifications. I believe whole-heartedly that Amercian football should be changed to a 100 m x 60 m playing field. Can you imagine with the popularity that sport has in the US, what an advertisement it would be for metrication if US football was played on a metric field? Could you imagine how the effect of having a sports announcer say over and over the unit name metre and how it would make millions of people metric literate to the point of familiarity with the metre? If you are looking for this listserver to provide you with what new metric products are coming out, you may go for months, if not longer, before you would receive another post.
