One of the reasons, at least this year, for repeated references to the mile in the UK, may be that last week was the 50th anniversary of the breaking of the 4-minute mile barrier by Roger Bannister.  There was a fair amount of press about it here in the US, and probably more on the other side of the water.  The proper response should be: it is a significant historical event, but the world has moved on to a different way of doing things.
