I think this 100 % related to metric. Metric is the
defacto language of all science. To have a comprehension of scientific
laws and data, one has to be confident in and have a working knowledge of SI
units. Growing up in the non-SI USA handicaps Americans from having a
comfortable working knowledge in metric and is a major reason why the US is
losing the lead.
Another reason may be the use of English as the language
used in the US. The English grammar is weak and being brought up on it may
handicap the mind from developing along more analytical lines. German is a
better language suited for understanding scientific concepts then English
and I personally feel the US would be more advanced then it is now if it
had adopted German in the beginning instead of English.
