A mail list I am a member of (it's for physics lab managers) raised the issue
of thermal expansion of train rails (or tracks). Specifically, the issue was
how thermal expansion and contraction are allowed for in rail design,
especially in welded rail. But that led me to a regular buffet of units...

In the process of surfing the web, I came across this page from Sweden. I
enjoyed reading this in metric units, suffice it to say.
   http://www.charmec.chalmers.se/railtech/suncurves.html

For mixed units, see
   http://www.trainweb.org/railwaytechnical/track.htm
In fact, the root URL provides an interesting menu of related topics.
