In the case of the 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet, the p is not silent.
 
However, this looks like a classic case of "thread drift," leading us to something that has nothing whatsoever to do with the original topic or, indeed, with SI at all.

Psi is pronounced like the word "sigh", the P is silent, as in psychotic or psoriasis.

It is a word which means "Parapsychological phenomena or abilities considered as a group" according to dictionary.com, also "The 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet", as well as the abbreviation for pounds per square inch.
