As you may be aware, New York has submitted its revised Olympic bid for hosting the 2012 Summer Games.  There is a site: www.nyc2012.com that contains the information for this bid.  If you look at the bid questionnaire and the map you will notice that they are predominately metric (after all, the IOC is an international and therefore, metric body.)

The point I am bringing up is that here is a wonderful opportunity for New York to lead this nation in metrication.  Eight years should be more than enough time to plan and implement metric signage throughout the city.  If the entire metro area is included, that would mean four states (NY, NJ, CT, PA) would also be able to metricate their signage.  What a great legacy this would be.  Maybe the USMA could lend support to the NYC2012 committee and encourage them to bring this about.  Right now, as a resident of the metro area, I am on the fence about this bid.  If I knew it would further the cause of metrication in the area and the nation, I would be solidly behind it.  I know that recently, people on this list have said that they believe metric signage is a long long way off.  I don’t think it has to be.
