I think it is useful to have actual instances, in the field, of ease of metric measurement.

We hired a bulldozer operator to bulldoze and reshape a large seasonal pond on our property.  One of the steps was using a transit to establish the desired water line over rough terrain.  The contractor had a vertical measuring stick marked, of course, in inches.  One of us moved the stick around and one of us sighted through  the transit, and at several times in the process he had to add or subtract inches mentally ("let's see, that's 17 1/2 inches and 19 1/2, what's that now...?")  I pointed out that with metric usage the task would have been much simpler.

Of course he wasn't about to change his measuring stick, but he did pause to think about it.
