Other than in today's messages, I haven't seen "metric tonne."

What I have seen is "metric ton," which is American for "tonne." When the
"short ton" (2000 lb) finally disappears, then the "metric" in "metric ton"
can be removed. Ideally, "ton" should mean "tonne" right now (and the rest
of the English-speaking world could get rid of their grotesquely ornate
spelling), and those who support FFU should have the burden of having to
qualify their ton with an adjective. However, we don't live in an ideal
world.
