If I had written the article, I'd have given the height - all kilograms are 
about 2.2 pounds, but a kilogram of PtIr is smaller than a kilogram of water.

How hard would it be to make an octahedral or cubic diamond about one gram, 
and measure its size? That might be a workable way to get a known number of 
carbon atoms, and since a mole of carbon is defined to be twelve grams, such 
a definition of the gram wouldn't depend on measuring the ratios between two 
atomic masses.
