system of measurement among many (imperial, other non-metric, metric, ...)
all of equal status.

Yes! That's my view to a tee! Although I'd say there was only two "proper/big" systems as such (SI and imperial) and I realise that there are a few inconsitencies between -say- a USFloz and a UKFloz, but that doesn't effect domestic usage. I would also support systems outside imp/met such as those in the far east as well as deprecated imperial and metric units. I wouldn't use them myself but I cannot see a reason why individuals shouldn't use them.


The one that is used is a matter of personal choice
rather like what clothes to wear or taste in food.

Indeed. I find myself using millimetres for one sort of job, and inches for another - Litres for one application and pints for a different one. There are units I would not end up using, like km and furlongs for example as they never enter into my life (unless I overhear a horse race or take a holiday in mainland europe, maybe).
