We need to have metric available in all areas to all, and those who choose not to use metric have had their day of non-metric being dominant in the UK and USA, now it is the turn of metric being dominant.
Once again the argument sounds more like something out of a hollywood movie with Emprorer Merciless finally getting his way!
Why not see it as metric being introduced into society for all to use if they choose it?
And when you say "dominant" in the UK - you should be careful to distinguish the "state" side from the "people" side. Most people still prefer to use imperial and continue to do so DESPITE the activities of the state.
for example, in the UK all road signs like speed limits on public roads, by law, have to be in miles per hour, even though I would prefer them to be in km/h like in most countries of the world,
They are in mph for many reasons:
1) Dual signs would be unreadable and potentially dangerous
2) There is absolutely no demand for it, except by those who are politically motivated
3) There is no safety benefit in changing them, to anyone
4) There is no financial benefit in changing them, to anyone
Only one group of people have demanded the use of metric on UK roads - politically motivated metric group(s).
Choice here is a non-issue.
There is as much demand for metric road signs as there is demand for all packageing to use the same font.
BTW when you say "even though I would prefer them to be in km/h like in most countries of the world" can I assume that you live in the UK?
For example, a hypothetical situation: if I choose to kill you, would you allow that, as you are pro-choice? Or would you want to say that is not acceptable, as some choices are not valid? Surely you would choose the latter, that there must be restrictions on society for the good of all.
How can you equate choosing a measuring unit with murder? Its no wonder metric didn't catch on in the UK and US with notions like that.
Another example, suppose I choose to speak in a language other than English? I might demand that right, and that all forms and documents that I have to use officially be in my chosen language, other than English, but they cannot be because it is impractical. My only choice then would be to do everything in English.
Try that argument in West Wales
Basically, you have to remember that choice is limited by restrictions, and that metrication is not against choice, it is about harmony. Harmony means we all use the same measurement system so that we all understand each other, to promote the betterment of society.
Harmony is such a terrible use of the word in this example. It is the same 'harmony' that dictates we all wear the same clothes in the same colour. It is an appalling use of the word harmony.
I hope you reconsider your position on metrication and realise that it does not mean trying to control people nor telling them what to think, but is rather a means to harmony within the world as a whole. There are many political issues in the world as it is which divide people, metrication should not be one of them.
And to make it "not one of them" it has to be put outside the arena of coercion and enforcement.
