Dear Terry and All, I can confirm this observation at Los Angeles, Phoenix, Denver, and Salt Lake City. They each have a device for checking the size of your bag in inches only.
This is a nuisance -- as a traveller -- as I carefully brought a bag from Australia that was specified in metric only. As I understand it, airlines vary in their bag size allowances, so I feel I need to know this stuff.
