When it’s a kilometer.
I was driving on NJ 24 today and noticed the sign for my exit indicated the exit was a mile away. I started pacing it and whoa and behold, it was .6 mile or 1 km rather than a full mile. I have also noticed that for other exits on other roads, the “Exit 1 mile” seems to be more of an approximation rather than exact. The difference could be several 10ths of a mile. This makes me wonder if converting road signs is such a problem. If the signs are approximate, the legends could easily be changed to 1.5 km or 1 km rather then converting to 1.6 km or 800m. A half mile could easily become 1 km. After all, 200m goes by pretty quickly at 110 km/h. Of course, getting people to accept the change, that’s a different story J
