The "Very British Mess" is the title of a report that was published in the UK a while back. It was discussed widely on this mailing list, apparently before Daniel joined us.
Briefly (for Daniel and anyone else who did not hear about it before) the report made the case for the fact that the UK is in a mess because it has partially adopted metric but continues to cling to old Imperial measurements, and also because it continues to use Imperial in a world, and particularly in the EU, which are almost exclusively SI metric.
