The face of Big Ben will never be changed, because there is no need to change the appearance of the large bell of that name that is within Westminster Clock Tower.

Changing the face of the London historical landmark - Big Ben- is out of the question; such landmarks are never, ever changed. It is a monument and these are heavily protected. If, for instance, and old pre-metric milepost is discovered, it is never defaced by metricating it. I saw an old milepost in Germany a few years ago. It does not mean that Germans love non-metric units, as the BWMA would claim, but that they preserve that mile post as part of their historical heritage. A German mile was about 7 km. And we reject changes in the units of length of SI as well; we only want definitions of units refined. The disruption of changing the length of the metre and the kilometre is only a good point for the BWMA et al. There is no need for a Nautical Kilometre. One day, when global aircraft navigation will have gone metric at last, it will use the kilometre as it is now. Any reform in the measurement of time should never entail changes in other SI units.
