What would be really slick is if they put "1/2 mile - 800 m" for small distances.  Rather than just a translation between imperial and metric, which most people would ignore, you give them the smaller sized unit which some might find convenient.  Even if they treat 800 m as "about 800 yards" it still drives home the point.
 
BTW, any more metric signs on the Maine Turnpike lately?

The new highway distance replacement signs they're putting up in our area (southern New Hampshire) say "Such-and-such 1 mile (1.6 km)"!
