Adobe Photoshop allows the resolution of the image to be specified in
dots per cm.

The whole thing is comparable to inch fasteners using threads per inch
and metric fasteners using thread pitch or fuel being in miles per
gallon vs. litres per 100 km. I know none of this is a rule of the
respective measurement systems, but the practice of the users. I
wonder why that is!
