I believe there is more sympathy for the point of view that Britain is in
a measurement muddle than you might think. A few months ago the subject
was talked about on local radio. People phoning in and contributing
frequently ackowledged this whether or not they liked metric. In terms of
people of my acquaintance I have generally found agreement once the issue
is raised even though they dont spend much time thinking about it
normally.
I would have loved to have heard that debate - I've never actually been
party to, or listened to such a debate. I would have found that
interesting.
I think Question Time might have raised the issue once (regarding the
metric martyrs) but that's about it.
You have to admit (and something I'm not happy with either). if there was a
list of "what shall we topically debate about today" on a show, radio
dial-in etc etc then metric/imperial would either not be on the list or, at
best, be 10 places below the question "Why wasn't Gareth Henson picked for
all the Lions' test matches?"
It's just not up there with the "big boy" debates, unfortunately.
I've often seen it dropped in (from pro-imp debaters) into discussions that
have no relevance to the topic being discussed but that just gets sweaped
away as not relevant.
I often listen to BBC Radio London and LBC which predominantly discuss
topical debates and "hot potatos" - again, I've never heard an imp/met
debate. Which is a shame.
