Many residential streets that have a "dead end" are labelled a bit like this:

Norman Street
(cul -de- sac)

This tickles many French visitors because it LITERALLY means (and excuse the language):

Norman Street
(arse of bag)

If someone can possibly work out why we do that I would be indebted to them!

We call them that in the USA too but not on the signs (which say "dead end" or "no exit" or maybe something else I forget). A blind alley is called in French "rue borgne", which means "one-eyed street" - makes sense, as a rue aveugle would be unconnected to any other street, and thus useless except as a runway.
