It might be useful to write to the South Dakota official who believed that
consumers in his/her state were "not familiar with the metric system" with
regard to changing the unit volume for gasoline sales due current prices. He is
referring to the liter. He/she should be challenged on the notion that the liter
is a unit of volume that is unfamiliar to the people of South Dakota. The liter
has been a mainstay of the carbonated beverage industry for 30 years, and is
often the preferred unit quoted in advertising for those products.
