Awhile back I sent a strongly worded email to US Representative David Wu
(using the form on his webpage) criticizing his remarks against metric (at
least in regards to it being used in football). Mr. Wu is one of the
Representatives from my state of Oregon. Yesterday I received a typed and
signed letter, in the mail, from him saying:

Dear Gavin Young:

Thank you for contacting me regarding your concerns about the role the
metric unit system plays in US competitiveness. I appreciate hearing from
you on these very important issues.

As a member of the House Science Committee, I have always supported the
advancement of science. I am a strong proponent of investing in research and
technology, which maintains America's leadership in scientific research. As
you may know, although the United States has not fully adopted the metric
unit system, the metric unit system is used in all fields of scientific
research supported by the federal government.

I share your opinion regarding the simplicity and versatility of the metric
unit system, whch enhances the transferability of the important advances and
discoveries within the scientific communities in the US and abroad. Yet I
believe that America's partial use of metric unit system does not
necessarily compromise America's competitiveness.

Once again, thank you for writing me. If I can be of any further assistance,
please do not hesitate to call me at 503-326-2901 or 800-422-403.

With warm regards,
David Wu
Member of Congress.
