I can understand the point you are making Brij but I think you misunderstand
it slightly.
The SI only presribes the symbils used for units not the spelling. The
English language version of the SI brochure may use the spelling "metre" but
that is not meant to be interpreted as a defnitive way of spelling it. The
symbol m is the definitive part. The symbols and written conventions are
language independent.
I would caution everyone not to confuse the universal system of measurement
and its symbols and written conventions with the issue of ordinary language.
That's an entirely separate matter and is not within the scope of SI, nor is
it a legitimate part of the metrication project.
Personally I thinks its best not to touch the issue at all if you want to
promote metrication. You will only play into the hands of the critics who
will accuse you of trying to destroy culture and heritage.

Subject: [USMA:34631] Single SI usage RE: Re: spelling
John, sir:
While the site <http://lamar.colostate.edu/~hillger/correct.htm>
gives the latest usage data, it still lack the 'correct International -
SPELLING' use of Le International d'Unites (SI), for Metre & Litre (see
table).
I do NOT send these comments to 'criticise efforts of USMA' but to appeal
that *technology must be led to a 'SINGLE' system of metric system (SI)*.
This status quo has already remanined for some 200 years - Time to Change.

You people keep forgetting a very important and knowledgable source of SI
imformation:
http://lamar.colostate.edu/~hillger/correct.htm
Even Google works. Try looking up answers before going off the deep end.
