I entirely agree that there is a poor understanding of the two terms. We saw 
examples recently of heating appliance ratings being quoted as BTU rather 
than BTU/h

All the more reason that people should learn the meaning of watt and joule 
and that 1 watt = 1 joule/second. That way they could see the disitinction 
clearly.
