It is true, at least for me (I am 176 cm high),
that a walking pace is just about a yard, and a running pace is about a meter. I
have run around 400 m tracks many, many times, and usually I put in quite close
to 400 strides per lap. And I have paced off distances on the ground in
order to estimate how many ten-foot pieces of PVC pipe to buy often enough to
find that the shorter stride is about a yard. These are good rules of
thumb, like the one I like best: 100 m in one minute at a moderate walking
pace.
