GPS is metric in the basic definitions as required by DoD. For example, the
WAAS corrections are all in metric. Internal units may vary depending on the
maker. The use and presentation is in a variety of units depending on the
maker and market.

Is GPS metric in the background, or is it USC. I recall only seeing it
described in USC terms, but that may be because I only looked at information
targeted at US consumer market.
