It's a lot more than a week earlier. Canadian Thanksgiving is the second
Monday in October. This is the same day that in the USA is recognized as
the day that Christopher Columbus landed his boat at San Salvador Island in
the Caribbean or wherever it was he landed. I'm sure the natives were
thinking, "What do you mean YOU discovered America, paleface?" (Leif
Erickson would also have something to say about that - last I heard Labrador
was part of America.)

I have stood on the site on Cape Breton Island where John Cabot landed five
years later (1497), and, in 1998, I got two Thanksgivings - on the October
one a bunch of co-workers and I were in Moncton, New Brunswick for a
training class with VIA Rail Canada.

Thanksgiving is also a fine time to be thankful for ways of
measuring; and, if one can (and so chooses), for ways of using metric
units for measuring.

The practicable use of metric measures and units in recipes are
probably an important mode of metrication. I have a hunch that, in
general, that metric unit measures are easier to proportionally
adjust or to adapt.

The Canadian Thanksgiving is observed a week earlier than the US
Thanksgiving. Is that because of the northern harvesting season
occurring earlier?

Best,

Ron
