Title: Re: [USMA:35521] Re: Happy New Year
Hi Pat,

I have looked at your web page.  May I respectfully make a few comments:

The phrase

<<
and centi is generally restricted to traditional women's activities such as cooking, nursing, primary school teaching, and sewing.
>>

could be construed as being sexist and will thereby undermine the promotion of the metric system.  May I suggest that this be re-worded as

... "and centi is generally restricted to activities where the accuracy afforded by millimetres is both unnecccessary and often confusing such as dealing with cloth, twine and ropes, in primary school teaching and in measuring the human body!.

May I also suggest that you add the words "under Australian Law" to the phrase

<<In many nations, contracts written in old pre-metric measures are simply not legal. For example, the Australian Weights and Measures (National Standards) Act stipulates that if units other than the prescribed legal units are used in a transaction, that transaction is void.
>>

My understanding of the legal situation is that if I (as a UK resident and citizen) enter into a contract with you (as an Australian resident and I presume citizen) and we negotiate the contract without leaving our home countries, then we would be well advised to write into the contract the law under which the contract is to be interpreted.  The law need not be Australian or UK law as long as we both agree as to which courts would submit ourselves should a dispute arise.

In return, could I suggest that you go to my 'Why metrication' page that I have recently re-written. You may find here some arguments in favour of metrication that you might be able to use in your work in the new year. It is at:
