I have a Pyrex 7738 thermometer with a spike for sticking into a pot. I tried the same experiment and got the same results. Around two weeks ago I had some problem with my stove and a repairman came over. (It's an electrical problem and he didn't bring a VOM, which I found odd.) He turned the stove on and I asked him how hot it would get, which he didn't know. I asked if it would reach 150 °C (the limit of the thermometer). He said it would. So I touched the thermometer to the element and it went up to 153, at which I pulled it off. phma
