In 1948 the CGPM (General Committee for Weights and Measures) (The inter-governmental body entrusted with the overall control of SI) recommended that either the comma or the dot be used to separate the decimal part of the number from the integer part. They also recomended that no delimter be used within the integer part of the number apart from a space when grouping digits in threes.
