While browsing for metal sources for our new machine shop (which I have nearly
finished setting up) at the College, I came across a website that is quite
interesting.

The FAQ page is written in a very humorous manner. But it also points out that
"14 gauge" varies by metal. For example (using their "inch"-style data) these
thickness are quoted below. I hesitate to convert them here because the
relevant (and possibly competing, divergent) standards may already have
stipulated metric values.

Thickness of "14 gauge"
        brass sheet 0.063 in
        copper sheet 0.086 in
        stainless steel 0.075 in
The company thus recommends that folks specify thickness in decimal (inch)
values, rather than by gauge size.

The URL is http://www.onlinemetals.com/faq.cfm and I think you might enjoy
roaming through it if you're into machining or materials.
