Or maybe the "Oh NO!" factor to get people to slow down.  Seeing your speed as 100, most people would at least tap their brakes before realizing what was going on.

While cruising up I95 today between Fredericksburg and Washington DC I saw one of those displays that gives the speed of traffic passing by, except this one was giving the speed in km/h. I'm sure it was an error on the part of someone but amusing to me nonetheless. Or perhaps the person who set it up prefers metric?
