I guess for non-MS I'm not much help. I use a combination of MS Paint,
Photoshop, whatever dumbed-down version of Photoshop comes with scanners
and
printers, and a creaky old thing called LView.
Probably Don's suggestion is best..

PS I do know with very few colors on a plain white background (scientific
plots, etc) .gif seems to give better color fidelity than .jpg. Everything
else is jpg.
That's because jpg's are compressed.
In most conversion utilities you can "tune" the compression when going from
uncompressed -> jpg, depending on whether you want quality or efficiency.
