Apparently they had to special order an inch-based fitting. I wonder
where it came from? Either way the whole pump will be replaced...in
metric of course!

Metric confusion delays repairs in Kroonstad

"A broken pump and metric system confusion left parts of Kroonstad
without water for several days, said the Moqhaka municipality on
Wednesday.

Moqhaka acting municipal manager James Lenyehelo said the 56-year-old
pump was finally repaired on Wednesday morning and supply was expected
to be back to normal by the end of the day.

Businesses said there was intermittent supply in some areas since
Sunday.

Lenyehelo said the main pump used to extract water from a river to feed
to the purification plant broke down about two weeks ago.

Repairs were made but the pump - installed in 1950 - broke down again
and the two backup pumps also had problems.

Water tankers were used to help out.

Parts, only available from overseas, were ordered but did not fit.

"The old pump is using the old inches and feet system not the modern
metric system," said Lenyehelo.

"We ordered those parts. They came in in the metric system."

Imperial-sized parts finally arrived on Tuesday.

The municipality will now buy a new pump, which must be ordered from
Germany and is expected to arrive by April.

Lenyehelo said the area most affected by the water shortages was
Maokeng, west of the city centre.

The municipality sent letters to businesses apologising for the problem.
