After a 15 year break, I've decided to become a volleyball referee
again. While reviewing the FIVB/USAV 2006-07 rule book, I was quite
pleased to see that all the physical dimensions (court size, net height,
ball pressure, etc) are defined in SI! The acceptable USC measurement
is denoted in parenthesis. It was clear that the actual dimensions are
SI, and the USC are close equivalents. For example, the court is 9 m x
18 m (29'6" x 59'). Net height is based on the gender and age group,
but is specified in meters to the nearest centimeter, and converted to
the nearest 1/8 inch for the metric impaired (for men, 2.43m, or 7' 11
5/8"). As an aside, on the official score sheet the start & stop time
for each game is specified using 24 hour format. The score sheet has a
time chart for those unable to add 12 for the afternoon times.
