I wasn't implying that the international sign was anything other than
round,
of course. Still, with a red circle, instead of a black one, the US
design would
have resembled the international sign, against a white background.
It's a shame
that the proposal to use a red circle was abandoned.

The international speed limit sign is round and not rectangular

We have in the US those who want to reinvent the wheel or make a
mark for themselves. That's what the USDOT is trying to do rather
than become part of the international community. As Tom Freidman
has said: "The World is Flat." We must join it, and that includes
teaching and using the SI exclusively, or we will be buried in our
own stew.
