Please join USMA in writing to the top officials in the remaining

Packaging and Labeling Regulation (UPLR) model regulation to allow
metric-only labeling on products whose labeling is regulated by
their states. I appeal particularly to USMA members who reside in
these states, which are Alabama, Hawaii, New Jersey, and New York.
In composing correspondence to the officials in the four non-UPRL
states (as Paul suggests, above*), I thought of two possibly useful
(and interconnected) ideas for those of us who do NOT live in those
states. Perhaps this would give you more ammunition for persuading
non-FPLA states to consider a request from someone from outside their
own territory. It would also give you a reason to contact your own
state individuals about this matter.
Officials of a state other than my own might ask why it is any of my
business what their state does. I suggest that businesses who wish to
business in MY state, which does have UPRL, might be effectively
prevented from doing so if they wished to do business in their state,
too. It would present such businesses from my state with the
necessity of producing one kind of label for my state and a different
one for their state. That could mean extra cost to the business
(increasing prices in both states) or the possibility that our
business would simply not do business in their state. Thus, it IS my
business to suggest action on the part of an official in another
state since it affects business in my state.
Carrying the above idea one step further, it can be argued that it is
reasonable for us living in UPRL states to write to OUR state
officials suggesting that THEY, too, might encourage the non-UPRL
states to adopt the UPRL because it effects businesses in OUR state.
Hope these ideas are of some use.

*PS. I think Paul had a misprint in his original message. I believe
that in one place he wrote "FPLA" where he meant "UPRL". I corrected
it in my quote from Paul's message. I hope I am correct. (I've made
that mistake myself several times.)
