There is one other reason why it might be difficult to remove the nautical mile
and the degree of arc - they are universally understood.

I've never understood why that connection is so terribly important,
especially since it is only correct for longitudes near the equator (as well as
all latitudes, I believe). But if you're flying/sailing at an angle and not
directly along a line of longitude or along a line of latitude near the
equator, the relationship is not so direct and therefore not so helpful.
It seems to be a poor argument for using nautical miles instead of kilometres.
