Dear FMI Leaders,
These days, products sold using the units of the metric system of
measurement are a familiar sight to U.S. consumers. Why not let U.S.
manufacturers have the mere OPTION of continuing the metrication process?
The half-liter, one-liter, and two-liter size soft drink product are a
part of the usual advertising, store shelf tags, and daily conversation
in America. Companies such as Procter & Gamble make products in rounded
metric sizes. No only do these products seem to sell quite well, but
have you EVER heard a report of an American customer saying, "This is
metric--I don't want it!"?
The metric system has been the legally preferred system in U.S. trade
since 1988. It is time to allow U.S. manufacturers the OPTION of
labeling their rounded metric products logically--in the metric system
only. I hope you will join USMA in urging an amendment to the federal
Fair Packaging and Labeling Act that would permit this choice.
The U.S. Metric Association (USMA), Inc., is a non-profit, national
organization, founded in 1916, and dedicated to voluntary U.S. adoption
of the metric system as the Nation's primary measurement system. For
U.S. consumers, metric labeling will be an extension of the choice THEY
have already made in their purchases!
Sincerely,
Paul Trusten, R.Ph.
