If you're going to spell "centimetre" and "millimetre" the English
way, why not go all the way and spell it "diametre"?

I posted a new idea on the Dell ideastorm website. It is a site setup by
this computer manufacturer to get ideas from the public about their
products. Recently thousands of people voted to have the linux
operating system bundled with Dell PCs instead of Windows and now
Dell are doing just that, although so far only in the USA.
So my idea I contributed is to quote screen sizes in metric. Please
visit the site and vote for my idea, the more votes an idea gets,
the more likely it is that Dell will take notice. It would be much
better if screen sizes were measured in metric instead of inches and
it is about time that the computer and TV industries changed to
metric for this.
You have to register but then you can vote on any idea there or post
your own. At the moment this idea really needs promoting, so please
click on the Promote icon with a tick so that the idea gets promoted more.
I also send it directly to Dell, as feedback on their site.

"I think that it is about time that screen sizes were quoted in
metric. All other parts of a PC are now quoted in metric, so why not
the screen size? Instead of inches, give us a size in centimetres.
For small screens use millimetres.
Which sounds bigger? 15 inches or 38 centimetres?
Dell could really lead the way here, with much larger sounding
screens and using a measurement system that the majority of the
world uses, i.e. metric. Outside of the USA, it seems that inches
are only ever used now for 2 things, one of which is screen sizes,
the other is too rude to say.
Things like kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes are all metric terms.
CDs and DVDs are designed to be 120 mm in diameter, or 80 mm for the
smaller ones.
All fan sizes are quoted in cm or mm.
The overall size of notebooks is in cm or mm.
I have seen vertical and horizontal dimensions of screens given in
cm, but for some reason, companies are reluctant to quote the
diagonal measure in metric.
It is time to change and quote all screen sizes in metric."
