I just now sent CNN some feedback on the article found at http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/08/23/midwest.flooding/index.html and I have copied the comment block below.
Jim I greatly appreciate your inclusion of metric measurements in your articles. However, you persist in making a simple error on temperatures. The unit is "degree Celsius", not "degree Centigrade" or (worse) just "Centigrade". The unit name "degree centigrade" (lowercase c) was changed to "degree Celsius" (uppercase C) in 1948, nearly 60 years ago. In this article "35 Centigrade" should be "35 degrees Celsius". Better yet, for more widespread understanding put it symbolically as "35 °C". Notice that the space goes between the number and the raised circle, not between the raised circle and the uppercase C. Symbols are internationally defined; spelled out unit names are not, which is why symbolic representation is the preferred style. Please feel free to call me or write to me for references your staff can use when writing metric measurements.
