Why hasn't the government complied with President George H.W. Bush's 1991 executive order? Publicly, the American people don't want to hear "the 'm' word."
The conventional reason I hear for this is that the Nation has "a lot on its plate", and no room for the metric system. However,progress is being made at the grass roots. As we have seen on the list today, another journalist has written a pro-metric article, and I have yet to recall an anti-metric editorial. The individual states of the Union are overwhelmingly (48 out of 50, Alabama abstaining but New York considering) in favor of the UPLR metric-only labeling option. When asked, the individual citizen is often heard to say, "Why haven't we done it already?" Politically though, metrication continues to ring a sour note. Leadership appears to be missing. One Vernon Ehlers is not enough; we need more metrication advocates in the Congress and, indeed, one in the White House. It needs a push. -- Paul Trusten, R.Ph.
