That particular conversion is an easy one to remember for physicist, since
you've long known that the speed of light is 3 x 10^8 m/s, or 300,000 km/s.
But in grade school you were always taught 186,000 miles/second.

Happy (in another half houf) London New Year!

Subject: [USMA:39971] Eurostar comes to a standstill

The 300 km/h of the Eurostar were converted to 186 mph, that was
back-converted to 299 km/h, and this ridiculous number has appeared in many
English language newsitems. Now one can go on converting and back converting
and in the end...... the Eurostar grinds to a halt!

I wish everybody a fruitful 2008 and that this year may see

real metric progress!
