Ezra:

Don't give me too much credit on the science side. I dropped out of Imperial
College, London University, after one year of a three-year honors physics
course (physics and mathematics in the first year, then physics only [with
some still-higher mathematics thrown in] for the two years I wasn't there]).
Bill Hooper and Gene Mechtly, on the other hand, have advanced degrees.

Now, on the computer front, things are a little different. I started as a
junior programmer in late 1958. Less than eleven years later, I was a Fellow
of the British Computer Society (even though I left Britain in 1957). You
already know all that, though, from the time we had lunch around a decade
ago. Incidentally, I paid the fee for life membership about three years ago,
so I'll be able to use FBCS, CITP after my name until I finally hand in my
dinner pail (i.e., when I get shot in bed, at the age of 99, by a jealous
husband). It helped that the life membership fee diminishes considerably as
one gets older (which it obviously should).

So, I try to stick to my knitting and let Gene and Bill stick to theirs
(although I do know somewhat more about physics than most other
non-physicists). As you know, I'm a stickler for adherence to standards and
a pretty good writer (with a book that won an award that was unfortunately
no help in selling it to the masses).

Well, it's time to stop blowing my own trumpet.

Well, I'm 57 and I wish I knew and understood half the technical and science
stuff you guys do.
So, this list is an educational experience for me on many fronts!
