Dear Tom,

Happily I am not one of those who has a prejudice against centimetres. However, I do not recommend their use during a metric upgrade.

I have observed over many years and in many different work places, many different work situations, in many different industries, and in many different nations that:

1 metric upgrades using millimetres are typically completed within a year.
2 metric conversions using centimetres take a minimum of 100 years.

If you are intending to be a metrication leader and you want to manage an upgrade to the metric system for yourself, your work group, your company, your industry, or your nation you need to know this difference. It is, of course your choice which unit — and therefore which time scale — you choose.

Cheers,
